The trailer for Disney’s 60th animated feature, Encanto, is a bright and cheery way to start your Thursday. Starring Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Stephanie Beatriz, the film focuses on the Madrigal family, who live in the mountains of Colombia, hiding their secret: They all have magical gifts. Well, all of them except Maribel (Beatriz).
The big selling point in the trailer is that the film has songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also co-directed, but the behind-the-scenes team is pretty dynamite overall: The three directors are Jared Bush (co-director and writer of Zootopia), Byron Howard (co-director of Zootopia, Tangled, and Bolt), and Charise Castro Smith (a writer and producer on The Haunting of Hill House), with Bush and Smith also co-writing the screenplay.
The Madrigals all have different gifts—shapeshifting! plant magic! animal friends—except 15-year-old Mirabel, who seems totally ordinary and feels like the odd one out. According to Variety, “When she discovers that her family’s magic might be under threat, she realizes that she is the only one who can save it.” The trailer has some truly gorgeous moments, and I’m not just saying that because it has capybaras, which are simply the greatest of animals.
Of course, since it’s a film about family, the Fast & Furious memes have already started.
Encanto will be in theaters in November.
